Utility Assistance

Do you have a shut-off notice? Associated Charities of Cumberland offers emergency help for utility customers who received a shut-off notice.

If you’re struggling to pay your utility bill, there are also several state grants for those who qualify through the Maryland Office of Home Energy Programs (OHEP). Learn more about income qualifications for OHEP and other utility assistance programs.

 

Paying for essentials like food and medicine

If you need support with food, clothing or prescription drugs, Associated Charities of Cumberland can also help. They offer food vouchers and groceries, some clothing and short-term and long-term prescription drug help. The organization assists with emergency medication and prescriptions for immediate needs. Associated Charities can also help Allegany residents fill out applications for long-term prescription drug programs.

The Salvation Army of Allegany and Garrett County is another agency that can help with basic needs. They have a food pantry, free and reduced-cost clothing and furniture, and youth programs. They also offer financial help with utility bills, fuel and rent.

 

Mental Health Resources In Cumberland

If you’re in crisis, call 988 and speak to a crisis specialist immediately.

The Allegany County Health Department in Cumberland offers mental health services for all ages. Licensed therapists, psychiatrists, and nurse practitioners can address mental health concerns.

Maryland Area Health Education Center (AHEC) West offers residents access to prevention, treatment and recovery services for opioids and substance use disorders through Healing Allegany. Health And Dental Care 

The Health Department has several other health-related services, including naloxone training, no-cost cancer screenings for those who qualify, immunizations and dental services for children and pregnant women.

Maryland Healthy Smiles Dental Program is open to any child in Allegany County up to 21 years of age and pregnant women on Maryland’s Medicaid program with an active dental card.

AHEC West also offers access to dental care through Health Right. It offers low-income adults access to urgent dental care services such as fillings and extractions for those in pain or suffering from a tooth infection.
