Loans And Grants
The Maryland Veterans Trust provides grants and loans to struggling Veterans. The goal is to help Veterans who will be self-sufficient after receiving assistance.
Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) provides support for unexpected financial situations resulting from deployment or other military-related activity or injury. Grants up to $1,500 are available to help with basic life needs. Repayment is not required.
Eligible expenses include rent, mortgage, home repairs, insurance, vehicle expenses, utilities, food, clothing, children expenses and emergency medical care. Learn more about the VFW’s Unmet Needs program.
Short-Term Loans Through the Military
Most military branches also offer assistance through short-term interest-free loans, financial grants, referrals, and other related means. These loans and grants are generally for unforeseen emergencies. They're awarded on a case-by-case basis. Contact your branch organization to see if you qualify.

American Legion Temporary Help
The American Legion may provide Temporary Financial Assistance (TFA) to minor children of current active duty or American Legion members. The money supports basic needs such as shelter, food, utilities and health expenses. Learn more about eligibility guidelines. Contact your local American Legion Post to apply for help.
Operation Homefront also has a Critical Financial Assistance program. It supports eligible active duty, deployed, a Veteran, or are wounded, ill, or injured service member or Veteran with a service-connected wound, illness, or injury. See if you qualify for help.
