Do you need help paying your phone or Internet bill? Help is available for those who qualify.
The program provides discounts and does not provide free cell phones. However, providers may cover the cost of a mobile phone for the consumer. Read the terms and conditions carefully and choose an authorized Lifeline provider.
Lifeline Phone & Internet Discounts
If you receive federal benefits from a government assistance program, you may be eligible for a phone bill discount through the Lifeline program.
It provides eligible customers up to $9.25 a month off the cost of phone, Internet or bundled services. The discount is higher for those living on Tribal land.
This is the only federal program to help with Internet bills because the Affordable Connectivity Program ended. If you received that discount in the past, ask your provider if they have other low-cost Internet plans.
Eligibility
You are eligible if you receive benefits from any of these programs in Maryland:
- Food Stamps/Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
- Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program
- Medicaid
- Federal Public Housing Assitance
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit Program
You may also qualify if your Total Household Income is at or under 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.
How to apply
To apply for Lifeline online:
- Create an account and check eligibility. You will need the last four digits of your Social Security number or government identification.
- If you qualify, you have 90 days to contact your phone or internet company to submit your application. Find a phone or Internet provider that offers Lifeline in Maryland.
You can also download an application in English and Spanish.
You may also see advertisements for free cell phones, but make sure you are using an authorized Lifeline provider. You can find them here. Also, read the terms and conditions to make sure there are no other fees. Finally, know the rules of the Lifeline program.
Only one Lifeline benefit is allowed per household, and the discount is $9.25 a month. You must recertify your discount every year.
