Need food? Prince George’s County Food Equity Council uses diverse partners to help residents find healthy, affordable, sustainable, culturally appropriate and safe food in all neighborhoods.

Applying for food stamps

Food stamps can also help families make healthy, low-cost meals.

You can get help from the local Department of Social Services (DSS), in Landover, Hyattsville or Temple Hillls. DSS will also be able to help you with other benefit programs. You can also learn about other assistance programs available to families and the eligibility requirements. Contact the Prince George's County Department of Social Services to apply for food stamps.

Emergency Shelter

If you need a temporary place to stay, there are emergency shelters throughout Prince George's County. The Homeless Hotline organizes placement. You can call it at 888-731-0999 or 301-864-7095.

Help is provided 24 hours a day. Referrals are made on a first-come, first-served basis. Prince George's County details the eligibility requirements and documentation needed.

At the shelter, you will be assigned a case manager to help you.

211 is also able to help connect you to a temporary shelter in Prince George's County.

 

Mental Health: Community Crisis Services

Community Crisis Services (CCSI), which is part of the 211 Maryland call center network and located in Hyattsville, offers several crisis response programs to support Prince George’s County and surrounding areas.

CCSI has an emergency shelter for domestic violence victims, coordinates shelter placements throughout Prince George’s County, and offers child protective services after-hours for child abuse and neglect reports.

If you need immediate mental health support, call or text 988. You'll be connected to the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, which you can learn how it works in Maryland.

 

Utility Assistance

If you need help paying your utility bills, Prince George’s County offers several utility assistance programs, including grants through the Office of Home Energy Programs (OHEP). See income guidelines, programs and step-by-step instructions to fill out the application correctly.

You can also request help filling out the energy assistance forms from the Prince George’s County Department of Social Services in Landover.

The Fuel Fund of Maryland may be an additional resource for BG&E customers.

Local support is also available for utility bills through Catholic Charities in Forestville, Laurel Advocacy and Referral Services (LARS), and the Salvation Army.

 

Financial Support

LARS can also help with food and other financial needs like rental assistance to prevent eviction, help with a security deposit for permanent housing and utility assistance for energy shut-off notices. Reporting Child Abuse or Neglect in PG

We're all responsible for keeping children safe and reporting suspected child abuse or neglect. You can call law enforcement or reach out to the Prince George's County Department of Social Services by calling 301-909-2450.

Child abuse can be:

  • Physical, sexual, or emotional or a combination. The abuse doesn't have to be visible.
  • Failure to properly care or pay attention to a child.
  • Sexual molestation or exploitation, regardless of whether there are injuries.
  • Impairment of a child's mental or psychological ability to function.

Reports can be anonymous, but you will be asked to identify the location of the child and caregiver, the approximate age of the child, and the identity of those responsible for the abuse or neglect.
